Examples Of James's 2003 'Textures' Series

I have just finished a BA Hon's Degree in Designer Maker at the University of Plymouth, UK.

The work I produce is heavily centred around my exploration of materials and processes in the combination of concrete, aluminium and jesmonite to create new solutions through the use of unconventional casting processes.

The 2003 'Textures' series was aimed at changing people's perception of concrete. How the stereotyped dull and heavy building material, could be bought into an interior setting and be aesthetically pleasing through the use of material combinations, creating forms that are intriguing to the viewer.

The use of a light weight aggregate to reduce the weight of the concrete, and the use of non-traditional processes help me create these unique pieces.

'Textures'
is a series produced in 2003 combining aluminium, concrete and jesmonite to create innovative solutions to a age old object... ...the bowl.
Mainly concentrating on the combination of material to exploit the numerous textures and finishes that can be achieved, making these pieces very tactile and interesting.

'Red and Blue'
The 2005 'Red and Blue' series was centred on contrast. The contrast that happens within and around the form, as the naturally occurring soft edges are broken and interrupted by the sharp edges of almost machine finished flat planes within the pieces, giving a contrast between a natural and industrial feel which I think works well.

Contrast can also be seen in the warm coloured jesmonite against the cold matallic surface of the aluminium with the combined finished textured surfaces.
